The Seattle Mariners earned their first victory of the 2026 season on March 28, powered by a strong performance from second baseman Cole Young. The team defeated the Guardians 5-1, with Young contributing both offensively and defensively.

This game is significant for the Mariners as it marks the beginning of a highly anticipated season. Young, at just 22 years old, hit his first home run of the year and made four key plays in the field. His performance stood out among other highlights, including a home run by Luke Raley and six solid innings pitched by George Kirby.

Manager Dan Wilson said, “It is what this team does,” referring to the combination of offense and pitching that led to the win. Young’s contributions come as he continues to develop his skills at bat and in the field. He said, “It just felt nice to just help the team win today. It’s good to keep continuing the hot streak ahead I had in spring.”

Young led Seattle in home runs during Cactus League play with six and recorded one of last season’s longest homers at 456 feet. Despite not being expected to be a primary run producer or batting near the top of the order, he showed power by hitting a home run off Guardians ace Gavin Williams during an important moment in Friday’s game.

Reflecting on his progress since last year’s struggles at bat, Young credited changes in his routine: “I think a lot of it’s just routine, just understanding what I need to do before the game. So yeah, hitting off different types of fastballs before the game, or hitting foam balls before the game that simulates the spin rate the pitcher has.” He also mentioned working hard on mobility and strength training: “I worked really hard in the weight room and also did a lot of mobility stuff too.”

As this new season begins for Seattle with high expectations for its roster, observers will watch how players like Young continue their development throughout what could be an important year for both him and his team.
