Colt Emerson, the top prospect for the Seattle Mariners, hit a two-run home run on March 27 during Opening Day for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers in a 7-6 win over Reno at Greater Nevada Field.
Emerson’s performance is significant as he continues to show strong form after a successful Spring Training, where he competed for a spot on the Mariners’ major league roster. He returned to Tacoma after finishing last season with notable achievements and is expected to make his big league debut this year.
The 20-year-old infielder gave Tacoma its first lead of the game by hitting a first-pitch curveball from left-hander Kohl Drake 408 feet at an exit velocity of 101.6 mph in the third inning. Emerson also recorded a line-drive single in the sixth inning and later scored on Patrick Wisdom’s single.
In just nine games with the Rainiers, including playoff appearances, Emerson has already hit three home runs. He has gone 10-for-35 with 11 runs batted in and seven runs scored, maintaining an OPS of 1.072. His statistics are supported by underlying data showing that sixteen of his twenty-six balls in play have been hard-hit at or above ninety-five miles per hour exit velocity.
During Spring Training, Emerson slashed .268/.340/.488 with two home runs over forty-one plate appearances while playing strong defense at shortstop and third base. The Mariners chose to have him start this season in Tacoma so he could get regular playing time but anticipate calling him up to the major leagues as early as June.
Emerson is recognized for having one of the best hitting tools among Minor League players but has also demonstrated significant power since reaching Triple-A.
