The Seattle Mariners defeated the Cleveland Guardians 8-0 on March 30, with Emerson Hancock pitching six no-hit innings and striking out a career-high nine batters. The game, part of Opening Week, saw the Mariners’ offense deliver strong support and gave their bullpen a needed rest.
The performance was significant for both Hancock and the team. With several key relievers unavailable, manager Dan Wilson relied on Hancock to pitch deeper into the game, helping to preserve bullpen arms for an upcoming series against the Yankees.
“Emerson executed to the highest degree,” Wilson said. “And it was a day where we needed him.”
Hancock allowed only two baserunners: José Ramírez walked in the first inning and CJ Kayfus was hit by a pitch in the sixth. Despite chilly conditions at first pitch, Hancock effectively used his sweeper—a pitch he developed during Spring Training—and combined it with his four-seam fastball to keep hitters off balance. “It just gives you confidence in your process of how you’re doing things,” Hancock said. “It’s one of those things where you can’t quite chase that type of result. But if you’re in there and you’re committed to every pitch, you’re doing the best that you can, throwing a lot of strikes, limiting free bases, I feel like a lot of good things can happen.”
Seattle’s offense contributed early runs including a three-run home run from Brendan Donovan. Two potential home runs by Randy Arozarena and Josh Naylor were held up by cold marine air.
Hancock is filling in for Bryce Miller while Miller recovers from an oblique injury suffered during Cactus League play. Although Miller may return by late April, outings like this could help secure Hancock’s spot in the rotation moving forward.
