The Washington Huskies baseball team lost a close contest to Northwestern, 10-9, on Mar. 29 at Husky Ballpark. Despite scoring nine runs and leading for much of the game, the Huskies were unable to secure the win in their second matchup of the series.
This result moves Washington’s record to 11-15 overall and 5-6 in Big Ten play. The outcome is significant as it impacts the team’s standing within conference competition and highlights both strong individual performances and late-game challenges.
Colton Bower continued his impressive run by recording a hit for the eighth consecutive game. His three-run home run in the first inning marked his seventh homer of the season and sixth during Big Ten conference games, making him the league leader in that category. Bower now shares the team lead for multi-hit games with Sam DeCarlo, each having eight this season.
Washington built an early advantage by scoring two runs in both the second and third innings, taking a 7-3 lead over Northwestern. However, Northwestern responded with consistent offense late in the game, including three runs in the sixth inning and additional scores in both the eighth and ninth frames.
In their final chance at bat, Washington narrowed a three-run deficit when DeCarlo hit a two-run home run after Daniel Porras reached base with a single. Blake Wilson followed with a triple but was left stranded as Washington could not bring him home for a tie.
Bower led all players with four RBIs while Bower, DeCarlo, and Wilson each collected two hits out of Washington’s total twelve hits on the day. On pitching duty, Gunnar Nichols started for four innings before Tommy Brandenburg took over for three more; Jackson Thomas pitched one inning in relief during the eighth while Jaxson Gore handled duties in the ninth.
The Huskies will look to rebound as they return to action Sunday against Northwestern with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
