J.P. Crawford delivered a walk-off RBI single on April 12, lifting the Seattle Mariners to an 8-7 win over the Houston Astros in front of a crowd of 43,294.
The victory came in dramatic fashion with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning. Crawford’s hit scored Cole Young and marked his eighth career walk-off since joining Seattle in 2019, tying him with Mitch Haniger for most in franchise history.
Crawford’s performance highlighted his effectiveness under pressure. Earlier in the game, he drove in two runs with another bases-loaded single during a comeback that saw Seattle erase a seven-run deficit allowed by Luis Castillo. “Confidence and believing in myself,” Crawford said. “It goes a long way.” He now holds a .390 batting average with six grand slams and 88 RBIs across his career when hitting with the bases loaded.
Teammates praised Crawford’s leadership and consistency during key moments. Cal Raleigh said, “He’s been a guy here for a long time that’s been important and been a big key for us, and he comes up big again.” Manager Dan Wilson added, “That’s what these guys do. That’s the heart they play with.”
Crawford’s season began with challenges after missing time due to right shoulder inflammation and starting on the injured list. While rehabbing, prospect Colt Emerson signed an extension seen as competition for Crawford’s position but is expected to debut at third base if promoted soon.
Reflecting on his role within the team, Crawford said: “It’s one of those moments you dream of as a kid in the batting cages… You have a chance to be the hero, and you’ve got to capitalize.” The Mariners’ comeback was also fueled by home runs from Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh.
