U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district, addressed several pressing labor and human rights issues in a series of social media posts published on August 7 and 8, 2025.
On August 7, Jayapal expressed concern over conditions in immigration detention facilities: “There have been 12 deaths in ICE detention in the less than seven months since Trump took office. This is unacceptable.
I’m deeply concerned about the lack of oversight and accountability and conditions at these private, for-profit facilities. My full statement: https://t.co/6NDZrQy801” (August 7, 2025).
Later that day, she commented on ongoing labor disputes involving restaurant workers: “Restaurant workers are an invaluable part of any community, and they deserve rights on the job & the ability to organize a union.
As their boycott continues, I encourage Starr and Knightsbridge Restaurants and @UHLocal25 to engage in good faith bargaining to reach an agreement.” (August 7, 2025).
The following day, Jayapal advocated for paid leave policies at the national level by referencing data from her home state: “The data out of Washington State is clear: mandatory paid leave programs mean smaller wage gaps between genders and races.
Getting sick or taking time off shouldn’t mean losing a paycheck. It’s time to pass paid leave at the national level. https://t.co/ORyXf27te1” (August 8, 2025).
Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017. Before her tenure in Congress, she served as a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in what was then Madras State in India, Jayapal has lived most recently in Seattle. She holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
