Luke Raley delivered a standout performance on May 8, helping the Seattle Mariners secure a 12-8 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field. Raley hit both a grand slam and a three-run homer, finishing with seven runs batted in—the most by any Major League Baseball player so far this season.

The achievement is notable as it marks the first time since Nelson Cruz in 2016 that a Mariner has hit both a grand slam and three-run homer in one game. Manager Dan Wilson said, “Rales is an incredibly hard worker. You know he’s going to put in a lot of work and a lot of time, and he’s been able to do that. He’s found something that’s really helping him, and that’s huge. That’s what you hope for. … He’s always going to go the extra mile to try and find it. Really happy to see that that’s paying off for him.”

Raley credited his recent improvement at the plate to advice from Edgar Martínez, senior director of hitting strategy for the Mariners. “That’s why we talk and we make adjustments,” Raley said. “I definitely feel better and more confident at the plate right now, and that’s a good thing.” Wilson added: “It’s not only the message [Martinez] brings, but it’s the messenger. And I think that’s what Rales is alluding too. He has a way of making it simple. When you can make it simple for guys, it really helps.”

Earlier this season, Raley struggled after an initially strong start but made mechanical and mental changes following his conversation with Martínez. In five games during May so far, he has hit three home runs while driving in ten runs with an average of .364.

Emerson Hancock praised Raley’s effort: “It’s the best. Rales, as hard as he plays the game, shows up every single day and does everything possible for our team,” Hancock said.

Both team members expressed optimism about maintaining consistency through May as they aim to return to their winning form from last season when they were one win away from reaching the World Series.

“We have a really good lineup,” Raley said postgame.“We just got to stay healthy, stay on the field and hopefully we have more games like today.”
