The Seattle Mariners are evaluating their shortstop options after J.P. Crawford missed his fifth consecutive Cactus League game due to a right shoulder issue, according to a March 17 update. With Opening Day just over a week away, the team is awaiting further information on Crawford’s condition following his visit to Dr. Keith Meister in Texas.

Crawford’s absence raises questions about who will start at shortstop if he is not ready for the season opener against the Guardians at T-Mobile Park. Mariners manager Dan Wilson said, “Until we hear what exactly the situation is with J.P., it’s hard to kind of weigh those options. So, we’ll wait and see once we hear, and then we’ll begin to decipher where we’ll need to go.”

Colt Emerson, Seattle’s top prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 9 overall prospect, has been getting significant playing time this spring and has shown strong performance both offensively and defensively. Wilson praised Emerson’s recent play at shortstop: “The reason that was possible was because the feed [to second] was right where it needed to be. And running away from second base, backhanding it and throwing it off balance on the run in the opposite direction and making a strong, perfect throw … that’s a tough play, and he made it look real easy.” Wilson also noted Emerson’s improvement at the plate: “[We’re] seeing him pull some balls, too, where he’s starting to feel a little more comfortable in the box… I think there’s some confidence there, too… He’s just getting more familiar, getting more comfortable and I think his timing is just better.”

Meanwhile, pitcher Bryce Miller threw a full bullpen session without restrictions after recovering from an oblique injury but will not be ready for Opening Day. The competition for the fifth spot in Seattle’s rotation now comes down to Emerson Hancock and Cooper Criswell.

First baseman Josh Naylor returned to camp after participating in the World Baseball Classic with Team Canada but was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup against the Padres despite taking batting practice.

As Opening Day approaches, decisions regarding key positions remain pending as players recover from injuries or return from international play.
