Daniel Kramer, MLB.com’s Mariners beat reporter, answered questions from fans in a Reddit ‘Ask Me Anything’ session on Mar. 27 ahead of Opening Day. Kramer discussed the possibility of contract extensions for key players and addressed other topics related to the Seattle Mariners’ roster.
The question of player extensions is significant as it could shape the team’s future and stability, especially regarding its homegrown pitching talent.
Kramer said that talks between the Mariners’ front office and Logan Gilbert’s agents took place during Spring Training but did not result in an agreement. He noted there is no urgent need to finalize a deal since Gilbert still has two seasons before reaching free agency. “Sources familiar with Seattle’s thinking have said that there’s a legitimate desire to lock up Gilbert long-term,” Kramer said. However, he added that price remains an obstacle for both sides.
When asked about other potential extension candidates among young starters, Kramer mentioned George Kirby as having perhaps the highest ceiling but suggested he might be less likely to sign early due to his background and personality traits. Bryan Woo was described as being at an ideal point for negotiations, with discussions reportedly underway between his representatives and the team.
Looking ahead to midseason moves, Kramer said relief pitching may be a target at the Trade Deadline if current trends continue: “A safe bet would be that they’re more aggressive in the relief market.” He referenced last year’s near-acquisition of Jhoan Duran as evidence of their interest in bullpen improvements.
Addressing concerns about replacing Jorge Polanco’s offensive production after his departure, Kramer explained that while Polanco’s power will be missed, new everyday second baseman Cole Young showed promise during Spring Training. Additionally, Brendan Donovan is expected to contribute by getting on base frequently for key hitters like Julio RodrÃguez and Cal Raleigh.
The broader implication is that Seattle appears focused on maintaining roster flexibility while investing in core talent through potential contract extensions.
