The Seattle Mariners lost to the Los Angeles Angels, 8-7, in an 11-inning game on April 5 that saw a series of defensive mistakes and missed opportunities. The game was marked by both standout moments and costly errors, with the Mariners unable to capitalize on key plays late in the contest.
The outcome highlights ongoing challenges for the Mariners as they seek consistency early in the season. Despite a strong performance from Cole Young, whose three-run home run gave Seattle a lead in the fifth inning, errors and lapses allowed the Angels to regain momentum.
Seattle manager Dan Wilson said, “We’ve just got to keep rolling, keep pushing. I know offensively, they’re making their adjustments. They’re doing what they need to do. And we’ve just got to keep drawing that traffic and start getting them in.”
A critical moment came when Randy Arozarena’s throw home was off target as Adam Frazier tagged up on a sacrifice fly in extra innings. Earlier defensive issues included Arozarena misplaying a ball that led to an extra base for Jeimer Candelario and Leo Rivas missing a chopper that allowed another run. Errors by Rivas and shortstop J.P. Crawford earlier in the game also contributed directly to runs for Los Angeles.
Despite these setbacks, Julio Rodríguez tied the game with two outs in the ninth inning with an RBI single but was thrown out attempting to steal second base immediately after. Rodríguez said, “We know who we are… We’re going to give trouble to anybody. And I just feel like, just sometimes, it takes time to allow all the pitches to show.”
Some of Sunday’s difficulties were attributed by Wilson and others on the team roster changes due either to injury or players returning from injury lists.
As Seattle continues its season, addressing defensive execution remains key if it hopes for better results moving forward.
