The Seattle Mariners became the first team since at least 1900 to record no singles in their first two games of a season, according to a report on Mar. 28. Through these opening matchups against the Guardians, all nine of the Mariners’ hits went for extra bases.
This unusual start drew attention because it highlights an uncommon offensive trend for a Major League Baseball team. The streak ended when Cal Raleigh hit a single in the third inning of Saturday’s game, marking Seattle’s first single after going without one over two contests.
During this span, the Mariners led MLB with six home runs through Friday’s games. Dominic Canzone hit two home runs on Opening Day, and outfielder Luke Raley homered in both of the team’s first two games. Cole Young contributed with a three-run homer during Friday’s win, while Brendan Donovan—an offseason addition—also hit a home run.
Seattle’s doubles came from Donovan and Randy Arozarena, and Leo Rivas delivered the team’s first triple. Notably absent from this early power surge were Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez, who led Seattle in extra-base hits last season. Raleigh had 84 extra-base hits last year—the most by any Mariner since Ken Griffey Jr.’s 92 in 1998—but started this season hitless until his single broke an 0-for-8 streak.
The Mariners’ unique offensive performance at the start of this season has set them apart historically and may signal an emphasis on power hitting as they move forward.
