The Seattle Mariners moved into first place in the American League West after a 9-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics on May 27 at Sutter Health Park. The win completed a series sweep of the Athletics, who had previously led the division.

Logan Gilbert earned his 50th career win with six innings pitched, while Julio Rodríguez and Rob Refsnyder each hit three-run home runs. Colt Emerson added his first career triple, driving in two more runs for Seattle. Mariners manager Dan Wilson said, “This is as good as we’ve played all season long, and as consistent as we’ve been. And again, it’s all parts of the game.”

The Mariners outscored the Athletics by 18 runs during the series, finishing with a run differential of +22 to 4 over three games. Entering this week with a +6 run differential on the season, Seattle now returns home at +24. The pitching staff recorded a combined earned run average of 1.33 during the series, while Mariners hitters collected at least ten hits in each game.

Seattle also limited Oakland’s offense; despite entering with an eighth-best .394 slugging percentage in Major League Baseball, Oakland was held to .299 for these three games. Notably, Nick Kurtz’s on-base streak ended at 48 games after he went hitless against Gilbert on Wednesday.

Gilbert noted an increase in velocity during his start: “I’ve been trying to get there, honestly… But to see it today, honestly, like, answered prayers.” Offensively against left-handed pitchers—a previous weakness—Seattle went 19-for-57 (.333) for the series. Refsnyder said about facing lefties, “We haven’t been very good against lefties. I haven’t really done my job up to this point… But it was a great series for us. We’re in first place.” He also revealed ongoing knee issues but credited team medical staff for their support.

Despite moving atop their division with a record of 28-29—making them leaders of baseball’s only division without a team above .500—the Mariners recognize that sustained success will require continued strong performances beyond this promising stretch.
