U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has served Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, posted a series of statements on April 3, 2026, addressing the defense budget, tax policy in Washington state, and immigration hearings.
On the morning of April 3, Jayapal commented on proposed military spending: “INSANE. This would be the biggest defense budget in modern history. The Pentagon is the only agency that has NEVER passed an audit. Plus just the other day, Trump said we can’t pay for childcare because ‘we’re fighting wars.’ ENOUGH. We can not keep funding these illegal wars.”
Later that afternoon, Jayapal reacted to developments regarding tax policy in her home state: “This is great news! It is time that the rich pay their fair share, and I’m so glad that my home state of Washington is leading the way.”
In the evening, she expressed gratitude to participants at an immigration hearing: “Thank you to the incredible witnesses who spoke at my seventh Kidnapped and Disappeared immigration hearing. I will continue hosting these hearings to lift up the brave voices speaking out against the cruelty and devastation of Trump’s immigration crackdown.”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District since 2017 after serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She succeeded Jim McDermott in Congress and resides in Seattle. Born in Chennai (then Madras State) in 1965, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
