U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in Congress, addressed a range of issues on her social media account on August 30, 2025, including constitutional rights, immigration detention conditions, and mental health services in Seattle.
In a post made at 2:19 AM UTC, Jayapal commented on the importance of legal processes for all individuals, stating: “Good. Due process matters. The Constitution matters. Trump must follow it.”
Later that day at 3:23 PM UTC, she criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for its treatment of detainees with disabilities: “ICE is holding a man with both physical and developmental disabilities, who doesn’t understand or speak English, and who is nearly deaf at a detention facility in Washington State. Inhumane doesn’t begin to describe it. We can and must be better.”
At 9:51 PM UTC the same day, Jayapal praised local efforts to address addiction and mental health challenges in Seattle: “Seattle is on the frontlines of developing lifesaving mental health and substance use services. I’m so grateful to have such strong partners in this city committed to addressing addiction and supporting our most vulnerable community members.”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott in Congress; prior to that role she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in India in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle.
She holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and Northwestern University.
