Rep. Pramila Jayapal, U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, posted a series of tweets on February 5, 2026, addressing issues related to federal workers, labor rights for nurses, and government surveillance.
In her first post on February 5, Jayapal criticized the Trump administration’s treatment of federal employees: “Trump has already fired or forced out nearly 200,000 workers. Now they are slashing protections for thousands more. Federal workers keep our gov’t running and ensure the American people get their Social Security, VA benefits, and Medicaid. This is ridiculous.”
Later that day, she commented on developments at Seattle Children’s Hospital: “This is fantastic news! I’m thrilled to see the dedicated nurses at Seattle Children’s Hospital getting a contract that provides them with fair wages and working conditions.” The post referenced an agreement reached by hospital nurses regarding compensation and workplace standards.
In another tweet posted in the evening of February 5, Jayapal expressed concern over surveillance practices by the Department of Homeland Security: “DHS is using biometric identification systems — filming protesters and legal observers. They are creating a surveillance state. That’s why I introduced the ICE Out of My Face Act to protect our freedoms and our democracy.” She cited legislation she introduced aimed at curbing government use of facial recognition technology.
Pramila Jayapal was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Before joining Congress in 2017—succeeding Jim McDermott—she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and Northwestern University.
