Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on October 31, 2025, addressing the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on federal workers and public assistance programs.
In her first post at 17:37 UTC, Jayapal wrote: “I hosted a resource fair to help federal workers who are struggling during this Republican shutdown. Our community, local gov’t, and so many organizations have rallied around folks who need a hand. I’m grateful for their work and will continue to stand with our federal workers!”
Later that day at 19:07 UTC, she commented on the administration’s responsibility regarding food assistance funds: “GOOD. The Trump administration must follow this order and ensure that SNAP funds go out on Nov 1.”
In a subsequent tweet at 20:04 UTC, Jayapal criticized former President Donald Trump’s spending priorities amid the shutdown: “Millions of Americans are missing paychecks because of the Republican shutdown or facing skyrocketing health care premiums. What is Trump doing? Spending $300 million on his gilded ballroom and renovating his bathrooms. He’s not working for us.”
The recent posts come as federal employees face financial uncertainty due to the government shutdown, with some missing paychecks and others experiencing increased healthcare costs.
Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott. She previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, Jayapal resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and Northwestern University.
