U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing issues ranging from the conflict in Gaza to support for transgender individuals and the medical workforce shortage.
On March 12, 2026, Jayapal wrote: “Tens of thousands of Palestinian children have been indiscriminately killed by the IDF in Gaza, including Hind Rajab. I am co-leading legislation with @RepSaraJacobs and @SenPeterWelch to investigate her killing and bring accountability for the countless war crimes the U.S. has”. The post referenced ongoing violence in Gaza and highlighted legislative efforts to seek accountability for alleged war crimes.
Addressing another topic on March 13, 2026, Jayapal stated: “To everyone who wants to vilify trans people: Trans people aren’t raising your rents or driving up your costs. To every trans person: We see you, we love you, you belong here, and you deserve to be who you are.” The message expressed support for transgender individuals amid broader national debates about their rights.
Later that day, she addressed challenges facing healthcare professionals: “Our country has a shortage of doctors and medical professionals. It’s time we invest in our medical workforce and get rid of debt in higher education. Pursuing your career should not leave you with a lifetime of debt.”
Jayapal has served as a member of Congress since 2017 after replacing Jim McDermott. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in 1965, Jayapal is currently based in Seattle. She holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
