U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on August 23, 2025, addressing international humanitarian crises and the importance of research funding.

In her first post, Jayapal highlighted the ongoing situation in Gaza: “The UN has officially declared famine in Gaza. This is an urgent humanitarian crisis and genocide. The Israeli government must immediately let aid in and stop starving people in Gaza.” (August 23, 2025)

Later that day, she criticized actions by the current administration regarding Kilmar Abrego Garcia: “This administration is lawless and off the rails. This is just the latest attempt to deprive Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who they’ve already sent to a Salvadoran gulag, of his right to due process.” (August 23, 2025)

In a subsequent tweet, Jayapal expressed support for scientific advancements: “This is amazing. And a reminder of the incredible work that our researchers and scientists are doing, in Seattle at UW, and across the country. Breakthroughs like these are exactly why we need to fund the lifesaving work being done at our universities and research centers.” (August 23, 2025)

Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, she resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
