Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, recently addressed key legislative and policy issues in a series of posts on March 26, 2026.
In her first post, Jayapal highlighted her participation in the House Foreign Affairs Committee and discussed bipartisan efforts to improve global health oversight. She stated, “Today in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I spoke about my bipartisan Advance Global Health Act. Diseases know no borders, and consistent, streamlined reporting on global health will help to strengthen oversight and ensure that Congress has accurate data when writing laws.” (March 26, 2026).
Later that day, Jayapal criticized Republican positions on fiscal policy with another post: “I don’t want to hear Republicans claim they care about ‘fiscal sustainability’ ever again.” (March 26, 2026).
She continued this critique by addressing social safety net programs and tax equity: “Republicans always resort to cutting programs people actually need, like health care and Social Security. We should instead be working on a more equitable tax system where the wealthy pay their fair share.” (March 26, 2026).
Jayapal’s comments reflect ongoing debates within Congress over budget priorities and approaches to taxation and public benefits. She has served in the U.S. Congress since succeeding Jim McDermott in 2017 after previously holding office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and now residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal is also an alumna of Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
