U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, posted a series of statements on August 21, 2025, addressing issues ranging from public broadcasting funding to child care affordability and political trends within the Republican Party.

In her first post at 16:36 UTC, Jayapal highlighted recent cuts to public media funding. She quoted Rick Steves, stating “A reminder from @RickSteves: funding for public broadcasting amounted to $1.60 per American every year — but Republicans cut it, gutting local NPR and PBS stations.” She encouraged followers to listen to more of their conversation about these cuts.

Later that day at 19:17 UTC, Jayapal turned her attention to economic pressures faced by working families. She wrote “Child care is unaffordable in this country — full stop. And as Trump’s reckless trade wars and inflation make everyday living harder, these costs are out of reach for far too many. Congress must act to lower costs and help working people get by.”

In a subsequent statement at 22:34 UTC, Jayapal commented on shifts within the Republican Party, saying “The vast majority of the Republican Party no longer adheres to any set of principles. They are only guided by loyalty to Donald Trump — and that is how democracies fall and dictators take control.”

Jayapal has served as the U.S. Representative for Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017. Prior to her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and Northwestern University.
