U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in Congress, has recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing government funding negotiations, immigration policy, and federal detention center contracts.
On September 24, 2025, Jayapal highlighted the looming threat of a government shutdown, writing: “There are 6 days until the government funding deadline and a potential shutdown. Trump and Republicans refuse to negotiate to restore cuts to Americans’ health care from their Big Bad Betrayal.”
The following day, she commented on the economic impact of mass deportations. On September 25, 2025, Jayapal stated: “Mass deportations don’t open up more jobs for U.S.-born workers — they cause American workers to lose jobs, wages to go down, and our economy to slow. Watch Robert Lynch, an economics professor at Washington College, discuss how immigrants are good for the American economy.”
Later that same day, Jayapal announced her call for an investigation into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contracts with private prison corporations. She wrote: “NEW: I’m calling for a Government Accountability Office investigation into ICE’s billion-dollar detention center contracts with private corporations. Trump’s admin is funneling cash to shady private prison corporations — including GOP donors. The American people deserve answers.”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Her educational background includes degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
