U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, addressed the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on health care in a series of posts on October 9, 2025.

On the evening of October 8, Jayapal held a town hall to discuss the situation with constituents. She wrote the following day: “Last night, I hosted a town hall on the Republican Shutdown with hundreds of our neighbors. Folks packed the room and asked incredibly thoughtful questions about what this shutdown will mean for them and how we can continue to hold the line to protect health care.” (October 9, 2025)

Later that day, she commented on the duration and political dynamics of the shutdown: “We are 9 days into the Republican Shutdown. Democrats are ready to negotiate to save health care and stop premiums from skyrocketing even higher. Republicans refuse.” (October 9, 2025)

In a subsequent post, Jayapal expressed concern over proposed health care cuts: “Republicans want to cut health care for millions of Americans, as premiums are set to skyrocket in the coming weeks. This is a crisis — real people and real lives are on the line. Republicans must end this shutdown and protect health care for our communities now.” (October 9, 2025)

Jayapal has served in Congress since 2017 after replacing Jim McDermott and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
