U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, has used her social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on Americans, particularly regarding health care and federal workers.
On October 15, 2025, Jayapal posted, “We are on day 15 of the Republican Shutdown, and Republicans still won’t come to the table. If Republicans don’t act to save health care, 22 million Americans will face skyrocketing premiums, leaving many with no choice but to cancel their plans and hope they don’t get sick.”
Later that same day, she added, “Democrats are back in DC, ready to get to work. Republicans are nowhere to be found. It’s time to get back to work, protect health care, and end this Republican shutdown.”
In a tweet dated October 16, 2025, Jayapal highlighted her engagement with those affected by the shutdown: “I hosted a roundtable with federal workers impacted by furloughs, and AFGE 1128 President Alton McDonald offered to share his thoughts about this administration’s treatment of federal workers. Listen to his story:”
Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott, has a background in both state and national politics, having served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, she currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
The government shutdown referenced in her posts has led to furloughs for federal employees and raised concerns about the stability of health care coverage for millions of Americans.
