U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district, has used her social media platform to comment on recent developments related to health care costs, immigration enforcement, and the federal government shutdown.
On October 7, 2025, Jayapal addressed the issue of health care costs and criticized Republican policies, stating: “Republicans are trying to blame immigrants for your skyrocketed premiums and absurdly high health care costs. But don’t be fooled — Republicans sold us out when they slashed health care for millions of Americans to give billionaires a tax break.”
Later that day, Jayapal commented on a recent immigration enforcement action in Chicago, saying: “Dems are launching an investigation into a recent Chicago immigration raid where people, US citizens included, were violently pulled from their beds in the middle of the night & children were zip-tied, separated from their parents. This is appalling & there must be”
On October 8, 2025, Jayapal posted about the federal government shutdown and its impact on federal workers: “Federal workers did not ask for this shutdown — they show up every day to serve our country. In 2019, Trump himself signed a law guaranteeing them back pay after a shutdown. Now he’s going back on his word and using their paychecks as leverage. This is illegal.”
Jayapal has served in Congress since 2017 after replacing Jim McDermott. Before her tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, Jayapal is currently 57 years old and resides in Seattle. She holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
