Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on October 16, 2025, addressing ongoing political issues including health care subsidies, detention center practices, and First Amendment rights.
In her first post of the day, Jayapal highlighted concerns over health care access during a government shutdown. She wrote on October 16: “If Republicans don’t extend health care subsidies, the uninsurance rate for young adults will go up 25%. Democrats are holding the line to make sure that doesn’t happen. It’s the 16th day of this shutdown. It’s time for Republicans to open the gov’t and protect health care.”
Later that afternoon, she addressed actions by the Trump administration regarding immigration detention facilities. On October 16 she stated: “The Trump administration is reopening the Irwin County Detention Center, which subjected women to forced medical procedures with no oversight. This is deeply disturbing and dangerous. Read my full statement: https://t.co/Kd40jCvWIQ”
In a subsequent post on October 16, Jayapal discussed efforts to seek accountability from former President Trump concerning free speech protections. She wrote: “.@RepMarkPocan, @RepHuffman, and I, along with 28 of our colleagues, are demanding answers from Trump as his administration targets free speech. We can not allow them to undermine our First Amendment rights. Read the full letter: https://t.co/1TXq17OLGm”
