U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, has posted a series of statements on social media addressing deaths in ICE custody and her opposition to further funding for immigration enforcement agencies without reforms.
On April 13, 2026, Jayapal wrote: “Today, I received a notification of another death in ICE custody. That’s 47 deaths during Trump’s second term. We must stand up and demand real accountability — ICE has a duty to provide care to those in their custody.”
Later the same day, she commented on broader policy issues and recent political controversies: “Universal health care. Peace, not war. Seeing the humanity in all people. That’s what Trump is opposed to, and that’s why Pope Leo is the latest person on his attack list.”
In a post dated April 14, 2026, Jayapal reiterated her stance regarding funding for federal immigration agencies: “I will not vote for another penny to go to ICE and CBP without major reforms. We cannot be complicit in the lawlessness we’ve seen from these agencies — including the killing of two Americans.”
Pramila Jayapal has served as U.S. Representative for Washington’s 7th District since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott. She previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016 and was born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in 1965 before moving to Seattle where she currently resides. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA, 1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
