U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, addressed several issues on her social media account on October 9, 2025, including deaths in ICE custody, the ongoing government shutdown, and recent political rhetoric.
On October 9, 2025, Jayapal wrote about the conditions in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers, stating, “Last night, I received notification of the 19th death of a detained person in ICE custody since Trump took office. ICE is detaining people, mostly in private, for-profit prisons that put profit over health. And now they have furloughed the safety inspectors. This is”.
Later that day, Jayapal commented on the government shutdown, referencing House Speaker Mike Johnson’s role: “Real people are suffering from the Republican shutdown. This caller is right, Speaker Johnson could bring the House back and negotiate a deal to end this any time he wants. He refuses.”
In a third post, Jayapal expressed appreciation for colleagues calling for accountability after a controversial statement by another representative: “Thank you, @RepGregStanton, @RepYassAnsari, and Rep-Elect @AdelitaForAZ for this strong push for accountability. Rep. Gillette’s words are absolutely horrifying, and there should be no place for calls to violence in our political system.”
Jayapal has served in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott and previously held a seat in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
