Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on December 4 and 5, 2025, addressing both personal and political topics.
On December 4, Jayapal shared a personal message about her pet: “Happy 14th birthday Otis! This guy has given us so much joy and taught us about unconditional love — getting us out for walks even when we don’t want to & making us laugh all the time. Even as he ages, he still has that mischievous playfulness. Thank you for blessing us with YOU!”
Later that day, she commented on recent reports of law enforcement detaining U.S. citizens: “‘I’m a US citizen, please help me,’ she shouted after agents forced her to the ground. ‘Why are you doing this to me?’” Trump’s secret police have detained nearly 200 US citizens this year. This is illegal and it’s a danger to our democracy.” The tweet references concerns over alleged detentions by federal agents.
On December 5, Jayapal addressed immigration issues in response to former President Donald Trump’s statements: “Despite Trump’s xenophobic and hateful rhetoric, we are a country built by immigrants. I stand with our Somali neighbors and all immigrants across this country.”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017. Before her tenure in Congress, she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in what was then Madras State in India in 1965, Jayapal now resides in Seattle. She earned degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
