Rep. Pramila Jayapal, U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, used her social media platform on December 4, 2025, to address immigration issues and respond to recent comments about the Somali community.
On December 4, Jayapal announced the introduction of new legislation aimed at reforming immigration detention practices. She stated, “Today I introduced my Dignity for Detained Immigrants bill — to combat the lawless and inhumane way this administration has treated immigrants in detention.”
Later that day, she addressed remarks made by former President Donald Trump regarding Somali immigrants. In her post, Jayapal wrote, “Trump’s attacks on Somalis are disgusting. WA has one of the largest Somali populations in the US and I am proud to have worked for decades with this community. As an immigrant, I reject this hate and stand proudly with immigrants from all over the world.” This statement reflects her longstanding advocacy for immigrant communities in Washington state.
In a subsequent tweet posted on December 4, Jayapal invited followers to participate in a live event focused on immigration detention practices under the Trump administration: “LIVE: I’m holding a Shadow Hearing on Trump’s immigration detention abuses. Tune in here:”
Jayapal’s statements come amid ongoing national debates over U.S. immigration policy and enforcement practices. She has represented Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in India in 1965, Jayapal is an immigrant herself and currently resides in Seattle. Her educational background includes degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
