U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has served Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, recently addressed issues ranging from immigration language to child poverty and the ongoing federal government shutdown in a series of social media posts.
On October 31, 2025, Jayapal wrote, “No human is illegal — and the immigration system is a civil one. The words we use matter.”
Later that day, she highlighted concerns about child welfare: “Child poverty has tripled since 2021. In America, a shocking 1 in 8 children live in poverty. And as Trump withholds SNAP funding, even more kids will go hungry. It does not have to be this way.” This post referred to recent increases in child poverty rates and the impact of reduced Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding.
In another message posted on October 31, Jayapal described her efforts during the federal government shutdown: “I hosted a resource fair with @cityofseattlegov and local orgs to help support federal workers during this Republican shutdown. Our communities deserve better – and I will continue fighting to cancel the cuts, to lower health care costs, and to protect our federal workers.”
Jayapal was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Before joining Congress in 2017—where she succeeded Jim McDermott—she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
