Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on social media between August 8 and August 9, 2025, addressing concerns about immigration enforcement, Indigenous health care funding, and actions by former President Trump.
On August 8, Jayapal commented on reports from immigration detention centers during Donald Trump’s presidency. She wrote: “The stories coming out of Trump’s ICE and detention centers are absolutely horrifying. No one should be treated this way. It’s cruel, inhumane, and far below what we should accept in America.”
Later that day, she highlighted her efforts to support Indigenous health care organizations. In a post on August 9, Jayapal stated: “.@TheSIHB does critical work to provide holistic and traditional Indigenous health care to folks in our community — and I was proud to secure $5M for their Thunderbird Treatment Center. Great to sit down with them to discuss how we can continue to keep folks healthy!”
In another message posted on August 9, Jayapal criticized former President Trump’s approach toward dissenting voices in the United States. She said: “Trump wants to rip away American citizenship from people just because they disagree with him. It’s just another example of this administration being openly authoritarian, cracking down on free speech, and silencing any and all dissent.”
Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott in Congress. Before her tenure in the House of Representatives, she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in 1965, Jayapal is currently based in Seattle at age 57. Her academic background includes degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
