U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of tweets between April 30 and May 1, 2026, addressing legislative reforms, immigration issues, and Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month.
On April 30, Jayapal criticized a recent legislative decision regarding surveillance reform: “Only a 43-day extension. Not a reauthorization. Complete incompetence. I voted no because we need real warrant reforms that the majority of us on both sides want instead of just extending with no reforms. I promise another extension will NOT get through on suspension. Later that day, Jayapal highlighted the struggles faced by families under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), referencing Cristel’s family: “Cristel’s mother is a TPS holder, and under Trump’s attacks, their family is facing incredible uncertainty and fear. On May 1, she marked the start of AANHPI Heritage Month by reflecting on her personal background: “Today we start AANHPI Heritage Month! As the first South Asian woman elected to the House of Representatives, I am so proud to be a part of this beautiful and vibrant community. Let us honor the contributions, culture, and history of AANHPI communities this month and every day.”
Jayapal has served in Congress since 2017 after replacing Jim McDermott and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
