U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, used her social media platform on October 4, 2025, to address the potential impacts of a government shutdown and federal spending cuts proposed by Republicans.
On the morning of October 4, Jayapal posted: “Today, I hosted a press conference with @kcexec to discuss how the Republican shutdown is going to affect our community. We heard incredibly powerful stories from folks who will be hurt by the Republican cuts. I won’t back down — Democrats will continue to fight for you.”
Later that day, she followed up with another statement: “I stood with members of our community who will be harmed by Trump and Republicans’ cuts. These aren’t just numbers, these are real people. Listen to their stories:” This message was accompanied by a call for listeners to consider personal testimonies from those potentially affected.
In a third post on October 4, Jayapal referenced U.S. immigration policy and refugee admissions: “The Statue of Liberty says ‘Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’ Trump has already decimated our immigration system. Cutting refugee admissions cruelly risks millions of lives.”
Jayapal has served in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott and previously represented her constituents in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras), India in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal is an alumna of Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
