Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress since 2017, posted a series of statements on social media between September 1 and September 2, 2025, addressing issues including gun violence, labor rights, and the use of military force on U.S. soil.
On September 1, Jayapal commented on the prevalence of mass shootings in the United States this year. She wrote: “The United States has seen 291 mass shootings in 2025. That’s more than one mass shooting every day.Â
This isn’t normal. Weapons of war don’t belong on the streets. We need real action to save lives.”
Later that day, Jayapal highlighted the role of organized labor in American society and criticized efforts by former President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers to weaken unions. She stated: “Enjoying Labor Day? Thank a union!
Organized labor is the backbone of America. As Trump and Republicans continue attacking unions and our rights to organize in the workplace, we’ll keep fighting for better wages and protections for all.”
On September 2, Jayapal made a brief post underscoring her opposition to authoritarian governance and domestic military deployment: “No kings. No dictators. No using the military on U.S. soil.”
Jayapal’s comments come as debates over gun control legislation continue nationwide following a series of high-profile shootings this year. Her remarks also reflect ongoing disputes between Democrats and Republicans over labor policy amid shifting economic conditions.
Born in Chennai in 1965, Jayapal is currently based in Seattle and has served as Washington’s 7th district representative since succeeding Jim McDermott in Congress in 2017; prior to that she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA, 1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
