Rep. Pramila Jayapal, U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, posted a series of messages on her social media account over Memorial Day weekend, addressing issues ranging from honoring fallen servicemembers to concerns about inflation and stock trading by public officials.
On May 25, 2026, Jayapal marked the national holiday with a tribute: “This Memorial Day, we remember and honor the brave servicemembers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We keep them and their families in our hearts.”
Later that day, she commented on rising consumer costs during the holiday: “As Americans come together for cookouts this long weekend, they’re paying more for the basics. Thanks to Trump’s illegal war and inflation, grocery prices are up on everything from corn to sodas.” The statement reflects ongoing debates over economic pressures facing American households.
On May 26, Jayapal turned attention to financial ethics in government: “The President of the United States traded TENS of MILLIONS of dollars in stocks this year. This should be illegal. Members of Congress, the President, and Vice President should ALL be banned from trading stocks. That’s why I’m leading bipartisan efforts to do just that.”
Jayapal has served as a member of Congress since 2017 after previously holding office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Her educational background includes degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
