U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, recently used her social media platform to address several legislative and judicial issues, including presidential authority over federal funds, LGBTQIA+ rights, and the detention of U.S. citizens by immigration authorities.

On August 29, 2025, Jayapal posted about congressional control over government spending: “The Constitution is clear: Congress has the power of the purse, not the president. This authoritarianism 101 — pretend other branches of government don’t exist and grab power. Trump cannot cancel these funds. Republicans must stand up to him.” She referenced former President Donald Trump’s attempts to alter federal spending decisions and called for Republican lawmakers to oppose such actions.

Later that day, Jayapal addressed conversion therapy practices targeting LGBTQIA+ youth in a post at 22:35 UTC: “I joined the @EqualityCaucus and 187 members of Congress in filing an amicus brief to the Supreme Court urging them to uphold Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy. Young LGBTQIA+ people deserve dignity and respect for who they are. Conversion therapy has zero place in America.” Her statement followed her participation with other lawmakers supporting Colorado’s efforts before the Supreme Court.

In a subsequent message on August 30, Jayapal criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policies: “ICE should not be detaining any U.S. citizens, period. Congress must pass my legislation to ban this practice immediately.”

Pramila Jayapal has served as a member of Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and now residing in Seattle at age 57, she holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
