Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, has recently used her social media platform to address issues ranging from privacy rights to healthcare and labor protections for app-based workers.
On December 11, 2025, Jayapal emphasized her commitment to consistent values in government, stating: “We can’t be changing our values and what we fight for depending on who controls Congress or the White House. I’ll keep fighting alongside my colleagues to protect the privacy of Americans and ensure your constitutional rights — no matter what.”
Later that day, she criticized Senate Republicans regarding healthcare policy: “Senate Republicans just killed Democrats’ attempt to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies for 3 years. They don’t want to lower your health care costs. They want you to pay more for worse care so their billionaire buddies in the health insurance industry can get even richer.” The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been a point of contention between political parties since its passage in 2010, with ongoing debates about subsidy extensions and cost reductions.
In another post on December 11, Jayapal addressed conditions for gig economy workers: “App-based workers are being ripped off by the corporations they create profits for. Today, I introduced my Empowering App-Based Workers Act to promote better pay, more transparency on the algorithms that decide when they work, and to make the gig economy more fair overall.” Legislation targeting gig economy practices has gained attention as digital platforms play an increasing role in employment.
Jayapal’s background includes serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016 before joining Congress. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Her academic credentials include degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
