Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress since 2017, posted a series of statements on September 11, 2025, addressing the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, her recent vote against increased defense spending, and ongoing political debates regarding immigration and high-profile investigations.
In her first post at 13:31 UTC, Jayapal marked the anniversary of the September 11 attacks by stating: “9/11 was the worst terrorist attack to ever occur on U.S. soil.
Today, 24 years later, we remember the innocent lives lost that day and continue to honor the thousands of brave first responders who risked their lives and their health to save others.”
Later that morning at 13:51 UTC, she commented on her legislative actions regarding military funding: “Yesterday, I voted NO on increasing the already bloated Pentagon budget. Defense spending is out of control, while working families struggle to make ends meet.”
At 14:20 UTC on the same day, Jayapal addressed current congressional debates about immigration policy and referenced efforts related to Jeffrey Epstein’s files: “Today, Republicans are putting forward a bill, once again fear-mongering about immigrants, in an effort to distract from their cover-up of the Epstein files. We won’t let them. Release the files.”
Jayapal has served as a member of Congress since succeeding Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in what was then Madras State in India in 1965 and now residing in Seattle at age 57, she holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
