U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in Congress, addressed the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on food assistance programs in a series of posts on her official social media account.
On November 8, 2025, Jayapal wrote, “Let me be clear — there are contingency funds available to fully fund SNAP while we are in this Republican shutdown. But what is Trump doing? He’s doing everything in his power to withhold these benefits, making Americans go hungry.”
The following day, she commented on recent election results and public sentiment regarding social safety net programs: “The American people spoke loud and clear on Tuesday night. They are against Trump and Republicans slashing the benefits that people rely on. They want Democrats to fight back, hold the line, and lower health care costs for millions of families.” This post was published on November 9, 2025.
Later that same day, Jayapal shared details about a meeting with Lifelong WA, an organization providing meals to individuals facing illness and stigma. She stated: “I met with folks from @LifelongWA to discuss their work — providing meals for folks dealing with illness and stigma. As folks face uncertainty over when or even if they’ll get their SNAP benefits, organizations like Lifelong are critical to keeping people fed.”
Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and now residing in Seattle, she holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) provides food-purchasing assistance for low- and no-income individuals in the United States. During federal government shutdowns, access to such benefits can become uncertain for many recipients.
