Pramila Jayapal, U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, has recently posted a series of statements on her Twitter account addressing issues ranging from international conflict to domestic legislative debates and political criticism.
On May 13, 2026, Jayapal commented on the situation in Sudan, stating: “The United States must act with the full force of its moral responsibility and diplomatic power to restore peace and democracy to Sudan once again.”
The following day, she addressed misconceptions about Sharia law in the United States. On May 14, 2026, Jayapal wrote: “Has there ever been legislation introduced in the US to adopt Sharia law? No. Does Sharia law require Muslims to violate US laws? No. Are there any US courts that follow Sharia law? No. Despite all this, Republicans held another hearing to promote their islamophobia. Disgusting.”
Later that day, Jayapal criticized former President Donald Trump’s approach toward economic concerns for Americans by posting: “Trump doesn’t think about your financial situation.”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (then Madras State) in 1965, she is currently based in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
