U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on April 16, 2026, addressing international conflict, consumer protection, and maternal health disparities.
On April 16, 2026, Jayapal announced the introduction of a congressional resolution regarding Sudan: “Today, I introduced a resolution to recognize the third year of the civil war in Sudan, which has led to the worst humanitarian crisis in recorded history. The United States needs to use our leverage to end this war and the suffering it has caused.”
Later that day, she criticized changes made under the previous U.S. administration to a government agency responsible for consumer protection: “The Trump administration has gutted the government agency that protects consumers from big corporations and banks that are ripping off consumers. Russ Vought, the acting director of this agency, should be ashamed.”
In a subsequent post marking Black Maternal Health Week on April 16, Jayapal honored Ashlee Anderson and highlighted racial disparities in maternal mortality: “This #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, I’m honoring Ashlee Anderson, who passed away after giving birth to her first and only son. Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. Congress must act to ensure all mothers get the care they need. #InHerHonor”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
