U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, recently addressed several national policy issues on her social media account, focusing on Supreme Court decisions, defense spending, and U.S. manufacturing.
On September 8, 2025, Jayapal criticized a recent Supreme Court decision regarding law enforcement practices under the Trump administration: “SCOTUS just allowed Trump’s DHS to continue targeting people based on their race, saying that speaking Spanish or looking Latino is enough to be stopped by law enforcement. It’s a violation of our freedoms that gives Trump more authoritarian power. My full statement: https://t.co/r7VPWsr6U9”.
The following day, she commented on legislative developments related to defense funding: “Republicans just blocked a vote on my bipartisan amendment to the Pentagon budget to repeal the unfunded priorities list. These are ‘wish lists’ from that increase already outrageous defense spending. We should be investing in American families, not a wasteful Pentagon budget.” (September 9, 2025).
Later that same day, Jayapal turned her attention to economic policy and trade tariffs: “Trump’s tariffs aren’t helping U.S. manufacturing — they’re crushing it. Factories are being forced to spend more on materials, then passing those costs onto consumers. We’re losing manufacturing jobs & seeing prices go up, all for nothing.” (September 9, 2025).
Jayapal has served in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Her educational background includes degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
