U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on her social media account between April 16 and April 17, 2026, addressing wealth inequality, legislative action on taxation, and her stance on surveillance legislation.
On April 16, Jayapal criticized the concentration of wealth in the United States and announced new legislative efforts: “It is an outrage that in the richest country in the world, the wealthiest 1% own 50% of the country’s wealth. That’s why I introduced my Ultra-Millionaire Tax Act alongside @SenWarren — so the rich pay their fair share, and we can actually invest in all Americans.”
Later that day, she posted a brief message: “One more gone.” (April 17).
In another post dated April 17, Jayapal stated her opposition to reauthorizing surveillance powers under FISA for five years: “I am a strong NO on a five-year reauthorization of FISA. My full statement:”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in Congress in 2017. Before her tenure in Congress, she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA, 1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
