Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, addressed concerns about threats to democracy and recent political developments in a series of posts on January 28, 2026.

In one post, Jayapal criticized former President Donald Trump’s policies, writing on January 28: “Trump’s attacks on immigrants, his handing over of our economy to billionaires, his slashing of health care — it’s all intertwined. It is a takeover of every facet of our lives. It’s authoritarian, and we will not let it stand.”

Later that day, she reflected on the events of January 6th and their impact on her perspective: “January 6th was an incredibly dark day for our democracy, and it changed my view of what could be possible in this country in the worst case scenarios. We cannot allow that fear to paralyze us though. Our democracy is fragile, and we have to stand up and work like hell to”

In another post from the evening of January 28th, Jayapal described her recent outreach efforts: “Last night, I hosted my 127th town hall, where hundreds of folks came to make their voices heard and stand together in community to protect our democracy. If you weren’t able to make it, I hope to see you at the next one.”

Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott; before joining Congress she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in India in 1965 and now residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
