U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of tweets on October 8, 2025, addressing issues ranging from former President Donald Trump’s financial dealings to political threats and the ongoing GOP-led government shutdown.

In a tweet posted at 17:08 UTC, Jayapal wrote, “Donald Trump is the most corrupt president in modern history. From taking a $400 million jet to selling his own crypto to donors, he is using the presidency to make himself richer every single day.”

Later that day at 19:41 UTC, she shared concerns about personal safety and political rhetoric: “A Republican state legislator from Arizona called for me to be ‘tried, convicted and hanged.’ It was a disturbing call for political violence and an attempt to silence my voice and our resistance movement. It should be condemned by members on both sides of the aisle.”

At 20:54 UTC, Jayapal commented on the effects of the government shutdown on immigration detention oversight: “During the GOP shutdown, the mostly for-profit, private ICE detention centers are open. The safety inspectors for them have been deemed ‘non-essential’. This is already the deadliest year on record for detained people in ICE facilities.”

Pramila Jayapal has served in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott. She previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and now residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
