U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district since 2017, made several statements on social media on August 14, 2025, addressing issues related to former President Donald Trump and Social Security.

In a post published at 16:14 UTC, Jayapal referenced travel expert Rick Steves’ analysis of global political trends and drew a parallel to the current U.S. political climate under Trump: “.@RickSteves has been to and studied countless countries that fell into fascism, and he says that Trump is consolidating power and taking from an autocrat’s playbook. Later that day at 16:53 UTC, Jayapal commented on the appointment of Trump’s nominee for the Bureau of Labor Statistics: “NEW: Trump’s pick to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics was at the January 6th insurrection. Completely disqualifying.”

At 19:14 UTC, she marked a significant milestone in U.S. social policy with another statement: “Today marks the 90th anniversary of Social Security — the most successful anti-poverty program in U.S. history. As Trump and Republicans try to tear down all of our country’s safety nets, I’ll keep fighting back and making sure every American is able to retire with dignity.”

Jayapal, born in Chennai in 1965 and now residing in Seattle, is known for her advocacy on progressive issues within Congress. She previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016 before succeeding Jim McDermott as representative for Washington’s 7th district.
She holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and Northwestern University.
