U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, has recently addressed a range of issues on her official Twitter account, including workers’ rights, abortion access, and government surveillance.
On May 3, Jayapal highlighted the personal impact of immigration policy changes by quoting union leader Rose Denis: “The workers I represent are not statistics. They are parents, neighbors, community leaders.” She urged followers to listen to Denis discuss how former President Trump’s threats to Temporary Protected Status (TPS) could affect the hospitality industry and its workforce.
The following day, Jayapal commented on the Supreme Court’s decision regarding access to medication abortion. On May 4 she wrote: “Restoring access to the abortion pill was the right decision from the Supreme Court. Mifepristone was approved by the FDA over 25 years ago and is safe and effective. As this case proceeds, we must continue to fight back against Republican efforts to try to ban abortion.”
Later that same day, Jayapal criticized congressional actions related to surveillance laws. In a tweet dated May 4 she stated: “Under FISA Section 702, any administration can spy on Americans without a warrant. It’s a ridiculous loophole that Congress has temporarily extended. Mike Johnson should immediately bring an amendment to the floor to require warrants and stop this unconstitutional surveillance.”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District since 2017 after serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She succeeded Jim McDermott in Congress and currently resides in Seattle. Born in Chennai in 1965, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
