Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, announced her opposition to funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under former President Trump’s administration in a series of tweets on January 13, 2026.

In her first post, Jayapal stated: “Proud to stand w/ @USProgressives leaders today to announce that we will oppose all funding for Trump’s DHS until there are significant reforms enacted to ensure what happened in Minneapolis never happens again. We will keep fighting for truth, accountability, and justice.” (January 13, 2026)

Later that day, she added: “As Trump’s ICE agents tear gas peaceful protestors, ram down doors without warrants, and now kill an innocent U.S. citizen, we cannot continue with business as usual. @USProgressives will not vote to fund DHS until serious reforms and guardrails are put in place.” (January 13, 2026)

In a third tweet posted the same evening, Jayapal wrote: “If the Trump administration is so confident in the propaganda they have spouted about ICE’s killing of Renee Good, they should welcome an independent investigation. But they won’t, because they KNOW they are lying. And we know it too.” (January 13, 2026)

Pramila Jayapal has served as a member of Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.

The statements reflect ongoing debates over immigration enforcement practices during Donald Trump’s presidency and calls from progressive lawmakers for increased oversight and reform of federal agencies such as DHS and ICE.
