U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in Congress, used her social media platform to address the potential government shutdown and its implications for health care. On September 30 and October 1, 2025, Jayapal posted a series of messages on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing Republican lawmakers and former President Donald Trump for their roles in the ongoing budget standoff.
In a post dated September 30, Jayapal wrote: “If the government shuts down, it will be thanks to Republicans. Democrats are fighting to protect your health care. Trump refuses to negotiate.” Later that evening, she stated: “Tonight, I stood with colleagues, advocates, and affected families to tell Republicans: Stop the shutdown. Cancel the cuts. Put health care over billionaires.”
On October 1, Jayapal reiterated her stance by posting: “Democrats are united — we are ready to fund the government and protect Americans’ health care. Trump and Republicans would rather slash Medicaid, raise costs, and shut down the government.”
Jayapal has been representing Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after replacing Jim McDermott. She previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
Her comments come as Congress faces an impasse over federal funding that could result in a government shutdown if not resolved. The dispute centers around proposed spending cuts and changes to Medicaid—a federal program providing health coverage for low-income Americans—which have become key points of contention between Democratic and Republican lawmakers.
