Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, has issued a series of statements on social media criticizing the ongoing war in Iran and the actions of former President Donald Trump.
On April 9, 2026, Jayapal wrote, “The war in Iran has gone on too long — and should have never started in the first place. Congress must immediately vote on another War Powers Resolution.”
Later that day, she posted another message: “Donald Trump has launched us into an illegal, unauthorized war in Iran, and just two days ago, he threatened to end an entire civilization. His unhinged, dangerous threats show once again how unfit he is to be president. He must be removed from office now.”
In a third statement posted on April 9, Jayapal highlighted the impact of the conflict beyond Iran’s borders: “Since the war against Iran began, hundreds of civilians in Lebanon have been killed and injured, and over a million people have been displaced. Israel has also signaled plans to occupy much of southern Lebanon. This cannot continue — civilians must be protected…”
Jayapal’s comments come amid growing concerns about civilian casualties and regional instability linked to the conflict with Iran. The War Powers Resolution referenced by Jayapal is legislation designed to limit presidential authority to engage U.S. forces without congressional approval.
Pramila Jayapal was born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle at age 57. She previously served in the Washington State Senate before joining Congress and holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
